Rope technicians use many different devices to attach to their back-up rope. These vary significantly in design and there have been suggestions that some may be more effective than others if the backup rope is supporting any weight below the device.  This concern is particularly valid for technicians attempting the rescue of a victim suspended on a twin rope system and considering approach from above using the victim’s ropes.
