Roping technicians are using winches increasingly for rescue and access tasks.  There are significant advantages to using winches including efficiency and speed of raising loads. There are several winches that are commercially available that have been designed specifically for use with rope based systems.  It is important to gain a thorough understanding of their functional limitations prior to use, particularly with human loads. This report attempts to quantify some of these limitations.
