Shock packs, load limiters, energy absorbers, tear-away lanyards are all terms which refer to a manufactured component that can be included in rope-based systems in order to limit the peak force applied to a falling body.  There are several types and methods of construction, however here we will consider those which are sewn.

RopeLab conducted an online survey of understanding of the use of these devices, in the form of an open quiz, here, and the results showed a general misunderstanding of all but the standard single unit configuration.
